Explain to P2 that he/she will do all the flying except for some out of position work and some stalling exercises. He/she makes all decisions re: sortie management, staying within gliding range and respecting airspace, in effect acting as PIC.
Brief tug pilot to wave off 100 ft below elected release height? Time permitting-rolling on a heading exercise?
Intervene if necessary.
| 1. Accurate pre-flight brief detailing threats/hazards and mitigations, type of circuit and approach speed. |
2. Aerotow
|
| 3. Good general handling and LOOKOUT |
| 4. Steeper turns (min 450) at higher constant speed |
| 5. Demonstrates symptoms of an approaching stall with HASSL checks |
| 6. Correct stall recovery including stall with a wing drop (Instructor set up) |
| 7. Timely decision re: returning to airfield, entering circuit |
| 8. High key, configures glider for landing, checks windsock, makes radio call. |
| 9. Downwind leg flown at best l/d |
| 10. High/low key/diagonal leg all well placed for the days’ conditions |
| 11. Final turn completed at a safe height |
| 12. Approach speed stays within 5kts of elected speed, does NOT drop below. |
| 13. Fully held off landing with well controlled ground run. |
Local Airspace Test
| What is the maximum legal altitude above Parham? | 5000 amsl | ||
| What are QFE, QNH, QNE(FL setting)?
Which should you use? |
Height above airfield.
Altitude AMSL. Altitude on Standard Pressure setting. |
||
| If you set your altimeter to QFE, what indicated height could you have over Parham Airfield? | 4890 | ||
| In order to reliably stay below the vertical limit in Southdown airspace, to allow for altimeter inaccuracy and instrument lag, what vertical margin would you set and what would the altimeter, set at QFE, read? | Allowing 200’ (60’ error, 100’ lag):
4690 |
||
| You decide to do ‘one more circle’ while climbing in a 5 knot thermal. How much height will you gain? | 250’ | ||
| You pick up a good climb over the club in a southerly wind and drift over West Chiltington. What is maximum altitude directly over West Chiltington? | 4500 | ||
| How much further north can you fly before you enter different airspace and what is the legal maximum with altimeter set to QFE? | 1 KM
2390 |
||
| In order to reliably stay clear of airspace what horizontal buffer would you adopt while circling? | 1 km | ||
| 11km to the west the airspace which contains GOODWOOD has had its maximum height changed. What is it now?
How could you fly higher in that airspace? How high can you go with the transponder on? |
5500 amsl
Set Transponder to 7000 FL65 |
||
| What are the modes, SBY, ON and ALT on the transponder? | Standby, ID + location, ID + location + altitude | ||
| Just south of the airfield, the maximum altitude rises from 5000 to 5500 ft. About how far south of the airfield is the boundary? | 0.5 km | ||
| There is an understanding that we try not fly above Parham House below what height? | 1000 ft. | ||
| You are not cross country cleared. How far away from the gliding club can you fly? | You must stay within gilding range | ||
| Approximately how much height will a K21, ie 30:1 glider lose to travel 1 km in still air? | 100’ | ||
